Hello Pack 478,
This month's hike will be a special treat for the environmental and service mindsets in us all. Twice a year, Friends of Sligo Creek hold the Sweep the Creek event, inviting the local community to give back to this watershed that we have the privilege to enjoy all year long. This is truly a great opportunity for Pack 478 to help give a dash of beauty back to Sligo Creek Park, so try not to miss out!
The event takes place on Sat, Sept 23th and Sun, Sept 24th. There will be tables staffed by Sweep the Creek volunteers to handout bags, gloves, and other supplies, as well as suggest locales for Sweeping. We recommend bringing kid-sized gloves for your scout, as they may not have enough for us there. Pack 478 plans to have leaders at each of these events.
On Saturday from 9 to 11, we will meet at Kemp Mill Shopping Center at the intersection of Arcola Ave. and Lamberton Dr. to sweep Section 9 (Upstream from University).
On Sunday from 1 to 3, we will meet at the Dennis Ave Rec. Center at Sligo-Dennis Avenue Local Park to sweep Sections 7 & 8: (University to Forest Glen Road).
These dates are reversed from last year. Here is a map.
Your scout will earn two hiking miles per day for participating in sweep the creek, and they can go either or both days. There will be a sign-in sheet each day, and the hiking committee will update the miles.
A few reminders:
Leave no trace...and of course clean up after those who didn't follow this mantra
Bring sunscreen, bug spray, and water
Have fun while doing some good!
