Information on the Pack's Hiking Program
Put on your hiking boots, grab your map and compass, and take a hike! The Pack's Hiking Program tracks how many miles we hike as Cub Scouts. All miles hiked during Pack, Den, or individual Scouting events will be counted as each Scout strives for 50 miles during his or her tenure with Pack 478. Stay tuned for information on upcoming monthly hikes.
How the program works? All miles (or parts thereof) a Cub Scout hikes as part of Pack, Den, or individual scouting events count towards his or her total. Individual scouting events are scouting events (such as a District Activity Day) that your Scout attends without the Den or Pack. Unfortunately, family or other hikes won't count towards the total. The program continues for the entire time Scouts are members of the Pack, so Scouts can build up their miles over a number of years.
Who keeps track of the miles? The Pack 478 Hiking Committee keeps track of everyone's miles. To avoid confusion, please follow these guidelines for reporting miles:
- Miles hiked during Pack and Den activities should be reported to the Hiking Committee by Den leaders.
- Miles hiked during individual scouting events should be reported to the Hiking Committee by a parent/guardian.
- When reporting miles, please include Scout name(s), date, miles hiked, and name of the activity.
What recognition will the Scouts receive? Upon reaching 5 miles, Scouts will receive a 5-mile hiking patch. At 10, 20, 30, and 40 miles, Scouts will receive a border patch with the appropriate number of miles on it. Special recognition and awards are received at 50, 100 and 150 miles.
